Oral contraceptive pills are medications taken orally by individuals to prevent unwanted pregnancy. These pills contain various synthetic hormones, typically a combination of estrogen and progestin or just progestin, which work to suppress ovulation, thicken cervical mucus to impede sperm movement, and alter the uterine lining to prevent implantation. By regulating the menstrual cycle and creating an environment less conducive to fertilization, oral contraceptive pills are highly effective at preventing unintended pregnancies when taken consistently and correctly. Additional benefits include reducing menstrual symptoms and providing some protection against certain health conditions. However, they may also have potential side effects and are not suitable for everyone, thus consulting with a healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate choice based on individual health and needs is essential.

On July 13th, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Opill (norgestrel) for prevention of pregnancy. This is the first oral contraceptive daily pill that has been approved in the United States without requiring a prescription. This pill is a progestin-only oral contraceptive pill. This pill should be taken at the same time everyday and adherence to daily use is vital for efficacy.

Most commonly reported side effects include headaches, irregular bleeding, nausea, dizziness, increased appetite, abdominal pain and cramping. Contraindications of Opill include history of breast cancer or in combination with other hormonal birth control such as a vaginal ring, contraceptive patch, implant, injection or IUD.

Opill is not approved for use as an emergency contraceptive, nor does it prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Condoms should be used to protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
