Psychotherapy is a form of treatment that involves the patient speaking with a trained therapist to understand feelings, behaviors and other issues that people may be dealing with. There are several different types of therapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, creative arts therapy, interpersonal therapy, family therapy and group therapy.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is used to identify the relationship between an individual’s behavior with their thoughts, feelings or both. CBT is effective treatment for a variety of disorders including anxiety, depression, bipolar, eating disorders, schizophrenia and trauma-related disorders.
Dialectical behavior therapy is similar to CBT but is focused more on understanding and recognizing emotions, mindfulness and learning to accept uncomfortable thoughts and feelings. DBT is effective treatment for a variety of disorders including eating, PTSD, substance use and mood disorders.
Creative arts therapy focuses on engaging the mind through engaging methods such as art, dnce, music or poetry.
Interpersonal therapy focuses on helping people improve their relationships with other individuals.
Family therapy involves the therapist working with a family to help the family understand and resolve specific issues.
Group therapy aims to foster a group environment to allow individuals experiencing similar issues to resolve them. It allows the person to see that they are not alone and provides additional support.
